I Spent Ten Years Losing at Trading. Then I Stopped Trying to Win.

I Spent Ten Years Losing at Trading. Then I Stopped Trying to Win.

Most traders do not talk about the losing years. The accounts blown, the strategies that worked for three weeks and then fell apart, the quiet shame of checking your balance and seeing yet another drawdown eating into whatever you had left. They talk about the wins, the setups, the edge. Not the years spent wondering whether you were simply not cut out for this.

I spent a decade in that space. Ten years of trading, learning, trying, failing, and starting again. I read every book. I tested every approach. I convinced myself, more times than I can count, that I had finally found the thing that would make it click.

It never did. Not in the way I expected.

The real breakthrough had nothing to do with strategy

I was looking in the wrong place for most of those ten years. I thought the answer was out there — in a better indicator, a sharper entry, a different market. What I did not understand, and what took me an embarrassingly long time to accept, was that the obstacle was me.

Not my intelligence. Not my work ethic. Me — the version of me that panicked when a trade went against him, that moved stop losses because it felt unbearable to be wrong, that chased after losses trying to make the week go green before Friday. The emotional, reactive, undisciplined trader who sat behind the screen making decisions from fear rather than logic.

The shift happened when I started treating my psychology the same way I treated my charts. I began working on staying calm, being consistent, approaching every session with an objective mindset regardless of what the previous one looked like. That was it. That was the edge I had been searching for.

The problem that followed the breakthrough

Once things started to change, I hit a different wall. A frustrating one, because it had nothing to do with skill.

I did not have the capital to grow at a meaningful pace.

I had a process. I had consistency. But trading a small personal account with strict risk management is slow work. And I knew I was not alone in this — there are genuinely talented traders out there who simply do not have access to the funds they need to turn real skill into real income.

That is when I discovered proprietary trading firms. The idea that a trader could be funded based on demonstrated ability rather than the size of their bank account felt like it changed everything. I never looked back.

After a few years of consistency — really proving to myself that the mindset shift was real and repeatable — I had built enough of a track record, and raised the funding, to take the next step and set up HB Funded.

Why I decided to build one myself

After going through the experience of being funded, I kept thinking about the traders I knew — people who were good, properly good, but stuck. Stuck because no one had given them a structure that believed in them. Stuck because the industry can feel opaque, the rules can feel like traps, and the whole process can feel designed to make you fail rather than succeed.

I wanted to build something different. Something I would have wanted to find at the start.

HB Funded is a UK financial spread prop firm. We evaluate traders through a structured assessment process — not to filter out people who are not perfect, but to filter out the gamblers. The people looking for a quick win, who treat markets like a slot machine. That mindset does not serve them, and it does not serve anyone funding them. What we are looking for is consistency. Calm, measured, repeatable performance.

When traders demonstrate that, their profit split grows — up to 80 per cent. The better and more consistent you are, the more you earn. That is how it should work.

What I have tried to build differently

Everything about HB Funded is written in plain English. No hidden clauses buried in jargon. No rules that only reveal themselves when you are close to passing. I have been on the other side of that kind of opacity and I know how it feels.

We also have a referral programme, so traders can earn by bringing other traders in. And an affiliate programme for partners who want to promote what we are building and earn commission for doing it. Community matters in this industry. The people who find success rarely do it entirely alone.

This is for the trader who has not given up

If you have been at this for years and you are still here — still learning, still trying to figure it out — this is for you. The funding gap between where you are and where you could be does not have to be permanent.

The market does not care how long it has taken you to get here. What matters is that you kept going.
